Oh hey — tell me about this essay. What's the moment you keep coming back to when you think about what you want to say?
Student
I mean... there was this one time I fixed a computer for my grandma and she cried. I never thought about writing about that.
That's the one. Why did she cry?
Real Karl. Real conversation. The essay stays theirs.
"Karl doesn't write your essay. He helps you craft it."
Essays are personal. So is Karl.

Three steps. One essay
that actually sounds like you.

01
Tell Karl what you're working on

02
Write while Karl coaches
Karl reads your draft, asks the one question that unlocks the next thing, and helps you dig deeper into your own story. He never gives you sentences — he gives you clarity.
03
Submit something genuinely yours
Every word was written by you. Karl just made sure you found the right ones. The essay sounds like you because it is you — and admissions officers notice the difference.

Admissions-safe
Karl never writes a sentence of your essay. That's not a limitation — it's the whole point. The essay stays yours, which means it sounds like you, holds up in interviews, and doesn't fall apart under scrutiny.
💬

Works for every assignment
Not just college applications. School essays, AP prompts, scholarship applications — Karl adapts to whatever your student is writing, year-round. One subscription, every paper.
🔒
Private and secure
Your student's essays and conversations are tied to their account and aren't shared with anyone. Karl doesn't use student writing to train AI models. Their story stays theirs.

Questions parents
actually ask.

No — and that's the whole point. Karl never writes a single word of your student's essay. He asks questions, pushes for clarity, and helps them find the story only they can tell. The essay that comes out is theirs, start to finish. Admissions officers are good at spotting essays that don't sound like the student — Karl helps make sure it does.
Karl is a coaching tool, not a plagiarism detector. He's designed to help students who want to do the work — and he's genuinely good at asking the questions that make copied or AI-generated writing obvious. But Karl can't stop a determined student from submitting someone else's work. No tool can. What Karl can do is make the process of writing something real so engaging that most students stop wanting to take shortcuts.
If your kid isn't willing to try, Karl won't help. But if they are — even a little — Karl meets them there and makes it easier than they expected. Karl doesn't lecture or overwhelm. He asks one good question, waits for an answer, and builds from there. Most students who start a session with Karl finish it. That's not magic. That's just a good coach.
ChatGPT will write your essay for you. Karl won't. That's not a limitation — it's a deliberate choice. An essay written by AI won't sound like your student, won't hold up in an interview, and won't help them develop the skill they'll need for every paper after this one. Karl is built around one idea: the best essay your student can submit is the one they actually wrote. His job is to make that possible.
Full access to Karl for 5 months — start anytime, no fixed calendar window. Unlimited sessions, unlimited papers, unlimited conversations. Work on the Common App personal statement, every supplement, every school assignment in between. No per-session fees, no word limits, no upsells. One price, the whole application season.
Private counselors are wonderful — and at $150 to $300 an hour, they should be. Karl isn't a replacement for a great counselor relationship. But Karl is available at 11pm when your student finally sits down to write, doesn't charge by the hour, and never makes them feel judged for not knowing where to start. For families who can't access or afford private counseling, Karl levels the playing field. For families who already have a counselor, Karl handles the day-to-day writing sessions so the counselor time goes further.
Karl works best for high school students — freshmen through seniors. The sweet spot is juniors and seniors working on college applications, but Karl is just as useful for school assignments, AP essays, and building writing skills year-round. Younger students can use Karl too — he adapts to how they write and communicate.
Yes — completely. Essays and conversations are tied to your student's account and are never shared with anyone, including their school, their teacher, or us. Karl doesn't use student writing to train AI models. Educators with portal access can only see activity metadata (papers started, last active) — never the content of what a student wrote. Your student's story stays theirs.
Karl is designed for students 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without parental involvement. If your child is under 13 and you'd like them to use Karl, we recommend a parent create and manage the account on their behalf. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account independently, email us at hello@karlwithak.co and we'll delete it promptly.
No — never. Karl doesn't sell, share, or monetize student data in any form. There are no ads on the platform, no third-party analytics trackers, and no data brokers involved. We collect only what's needed to run the service: an email address, a hashed password, and the essays and conversations a student creates. That's it.
Yes. Email us at hello@karlwithak.co with your request and we'll delete the account and all associated data — essays, chat history, and account information — promptly. We don't hold onto data we don't need.
That's fair. Karl isn't for everyone, and we'd rather be honest about that than oversell it. If Karl isn't clicking for your student within the first session, reach out at hello@karlwithak.co and we'll make it right.
Karl works best on a laptop or desktop where students can write and chat side by side. It works on tablets in landscape mode. A fully optimized mobile experience is coming — for now, a keyboard makes Karl significantly more useful.
Karl was built by a parent who wanted something better for students navigating the most stressful writing of their lives. The goal was simple: a tool that helps, teaches, and makes kids realize they can do this. Everything else followed from that.

Real students. Real essays.
Real results.

Karl asked me three questions and I suddenly knew exactly what my essay was about. I'd been stuck for two weeks.
I was worried it would just write the essay for her. It doesn't. She came to me excited about her own ideas for the first time all year.
My students actually use it. That's the bar. I've tried a dozen tools and Karl is the first one they open on their own.

See who's actually working
Your educator portal shows which students are active, how many papers they've started, and when they last worked with Karl. No guessing. No waiting until the session to find out nothing got done.
🤝
Karl handles the in-between
Your paid time is valuable. Karl handles the daily writing sessions — asking questions, building momentum, keeping students moving — so when you meet, you go deeper faster.
🔒
Student privacy, always
You see metadata only — activity, paper count, last active. Essay content stays private to each student. Karl coaches them. You guide them. Nobody reads their drafts without permission.
"Karl keeps your students productive between your sessions." Built for IECs, English teachers, and anyone who works with student writers.

Built with student
privacy in mind.

We know parents and schools take data privacy seriously. So do we. Here's exactly how Karl handles student information.

🔒
No student data sold. Ever.
Karl doesn't sell, share, or monetize student data in any form. Essays and conversations belong to the student. We don't use them for advertising, analytics, or anything else.
🧠
Not used to train AI
Student writing is never used to train AI models — ours or anyone else's. What a student writes with Karl stays with Karl, and only Karl. No exceptions.
👤
Minimal data collection
We collect only what's necessary: an email address, a password hash, and the essays and chats a student creates. No browsing data, no device fingerprinting, no third-party trackers on the app.
🏫
Designed for school use
Karl is designed to be used alongside schoolwork — not to circumvent it. Students own their accounts, parents can request data deletion, and educators see only activity metadata, never essay content.
🔑
Passwords never stored in plain text
Passwords are cryptographically hashed before storage. We can never see or recover a student's password — only they can reset it. Sessions are secured with expiring tokens.
📬
Questions? Just ask.
If you're a parent, teacher, or administrator with specific questions about how Karl handles student data, email us at hello@karlwithak.co. We'll respond directly.
A note on COPPA

Karl is intended for students 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Accounts require an email address at signup — parents are encouraged to create accounts on behalf of younger students and supervise use. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us at hello@karlwithak.co and we will promptly delete the account and all associated data.
